Casentino
The Casentino is a narrow and secret valley in the east of Tuscany between Florence and Arezzo, in which the Arno River flows till Subbiano. Explore this wonderful region rich in medieval villages and Tuscan villas for rent.
There is indeed a large choice of accommodations in the Casentino, such as striking old stone farmhouses, B&B and apartments located in amazing positions.
The Casentino is one of the four valleys in which the province of Arezzo is divided.
It is a land to be visited in silence. Over the centuries its peculiar landscape made up of mountains, forests and water, because of their evocative power, gave rise to the special spiritual dimension in ”La Verna” and Camaldoli” the hermitages of San Francesco and San Romualdo respectively. It can still be felt nowadays. Here the persistent strength of their spirituality is still persistent as the authentic genius loci.
The hills and the plains, where the Arno winds, bear the indelible signs of the peasants who shaped along the centuries the “Vasarian landscape”, a picture of villages, huddled around castles, or Romanesque churches, watched over by cypresses, such as Bibbiena, Poppi, Castel Focognano, Pratovecchio.
In this valley Man and Environment have together written a story of ancient respect.
Here the shepherds, shearers and charcoal-makers have conjured recipes such as “acquacotta” and “scottiglia” from simple ingredients. That humble food that had to be prepared quickly and easily stored for the long period of gruelling work, far from home, has come down to us a vital part of the most authentic Tuscan cooking tradition .
Tuscany at its best. Not to be missed
